FC Porto 0-1 Celtic

Celtic beat FC Porto in Portugal with a late 88th minute goal scored by Jan Vennegoor . The Dutchman headed the ball into the net after a courageous jump.

Steaua Bucuresti 3-1 AS Roma

AS Roma started their pre-season friendly games with an away game against top Romanian  team, Steaua Bucharest. The Italians were beaten comfortably and were weak tactically.

Steaua,  scored three times against the runners up in the Serie A  last season.

Dayro Moreno  scored first in the 8th minute after chipping  Roma’s goalkeeper. Bogdan Stancu made it 2-0 in the 75th minute with a close range header after a corner kick  Adrian Neaga made it 3-0 for the Romanian side. A surprise this as on paper the Italians were a far stronger team.

Mirco Vucinic scored the consolation goal for AS Roma in injury time with a  long range free kick . Check out the goals below.

Barcelona 5-1 Dundee United

Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick  as Dundee United became the second Scottish side this week to be thrashed by Barcelona.

Craig Levein’s men took the lead through Prince Buaben before Thierry Henry equalised for Barcelona. Messi then changed the complexion of the game when he was introduced as a second-half substitute and scored three goals

Manchester City 0-1 Hamburg

Manchester City were outclassed against Hamburg as they lost 1-0  against the talented Bundesliga side.

 Jonathan Pitroipa scored the only goal of the game after he took control of a loose ball in the box and put it calmly past City goalkeeper Joe Hart.

Pitroipa was a constant thorn in the side to the City defence and he could have doubled the German side’s lead but didn’t take advantage of a mistake by City captain Richard Dunne.

Mark Hughes’  Manchester City side came out stronger in the second half but couldn’t take any chances.  Petrov came closest for City but his left-foot shot from the edge of the penalty area edged the post.

Benfica 2-3 Blackburn Rovers

Blackburn defeated Benfica in a friendly played yesterday, as The B-win Liga League and the English Premier League clashed in Portugal. The result was 3-2 for Blackburn Rovers.

Benfica went one up in the 8th minute much to the delight of the home crowd. Blackburn, playing with confidence and fluency scored 3 goals in the next 40 minutes to take a convincing lead.

Makulka made it 2-3 in the 68th minute.

Swansea 0-4 Espanyol

Ok-I haven’t featured Swansea yet. Shame they lost 4-0 .

Swansea were thrashed in Spain as they played Espanyol and were defeated 4-0 .  

Reported Liverpool target Albert Riera will have had scouts in attendance look up and take notice as he scored an impressive brace in the 73rd and 88th minutes.

Swansea went into the interval trailing courtesy of Raul Tamuda’s header from a set-piece and it got no better for Roberto Martinez’s side.Substitutions were made at half-time but it was Espanyol’s  quality that shone as Riera scored two to add to Jonathan Soriano’s effort.

Brondby 1- 2 Juventus

Italy’s Juventus defeated the Danish side Brondby IF in a closely contested  pre-season friendly. Juventus scored in the 36th minute from an Amauri header . Vicenzo Iaquinta made it 2-0 just before half time. 

Brondby pulled one back after a 57th minute penalty from Farnerud but didn’t really threaten the Juventus goal again and were unable to equalise. 

Wisla Krakow 1 - 1 FC Copenhagen

Another summer world football friendly match was between Wisla Krakow and FC Copenhagen. The Danish side opened the scoring with a good  2nd minute header  by Ulrik Laursen. Wisla equalized from the penalty spot in the 25th minute. The match ended 1-1. Watch the goals in the video below.

Ronaldinho’s Overweight friendly

Ronaldinho played his first match of the 2008-09 season, a friendly for charity game with Ronaldinho and his friends playing against  Lionel Messi and his .

The highlights must have shown you two  things. The first is that Ronaldinho is still a gifted player with great touches, the second is that he clearly enjoys the good life too much. He is overweight and clearly not fit.

No wonder that no important club wants to buy him. New  reports state that the only club really interested in purchasing Ronaldinho’s football services are LA Galaxy. Beckham’s MLS club has offered £20 million  to Barcelona and promised Ronaldinho  £12 million for a five year contract.
