Holland had the opportunity in this friendly to gain some sort of revenge against Russia as the Russians were the ones that knocked out the highly talented Dutch side from the EURO 2008 quarter-finals.

 Van Persie opened the scoring for Holland in the 23rd minute with a  curled shot, that gave the Russian goalkeeper no chance. Holland maintained pressure but were unable to add to their score. The Russians  equalized in the 78th minute as Zyrianov scored from the penalty spot.
