Deco joins Chelsea for £7.9 million.
June 30, 2008
Chelsea have completed the signing of Barcelona playmaker Deco for an estimated fee of £7.9million.
Deco has signed a two year deal and Chelsea hope he will be the key to unlocking the premiership this season.
The 30-year-old is Luiz Felipe Scolari’s first signing, despite the fact that the Brazilian does not take over at Stamford Bridge until Tuesday.
A statement on Chelsea’s official website said: “Chelsea football club is delighted to confirm the signing of Deco from FC Barcelona.”
Scolari reunion
Summer speculation consistently linked Deco with a move to Chelsea and Scolari’s arrival at Chelsea fuelled the rumours to fever pitch.
Former Portugal boss Scolari coached Deco, and it was thought that both he and Scolari were keen to work together again.
Having now completed the deal, the Chelsae could see Deco as a possible replacement for Frank Lampard, who is being linked with a move to Internazionale.
Deco must be praying that Chelsea will win trophies this season or he and Scolari may find themselves on the back burner !
“I am sure I have come at the right time to do great things and be able to help Chelsea go back to the way it was,” Deco told Chelsea TV.
“The Premier League is a great league and it is getting better and you can see that with the Champions League final, where you had two English teams.
“It is great that we have so many great players here at Chelsea and it is great that there is the competition which is healthy for everybody and this just makes the team better.
“To have great players in any position of the club just enhances the club. I know it is a new challenge but I am looking forward to it.
“I know I need a little bit of time to adapt, but I am sure I will adapt quite well and quite fast and do my best for the team.”
So what next for Chelsea- success?
Deco will certainly hope so.

Spain 1 Germany 0: European Championship final
June 29, 2008
Germany were completely outplayed in the European Championship final of 2008 by a more exciting and skilful Spanish team. Torres put Spain ahead in the 33rd minute but there should have been at least 2 more as the Germans were rarely in the game.
Spain were deserved winners of the tournament and have installed themselves as one of the favourites for the World cup in 2010.
Congratulations Spain !

Spain-the first final in decades
June 29, 2008
The Spanish football team have won nothing for years. They start as favourites but my view is that the Germans will win.
Watch the higlights of their progress to the final.
Germany their route to the final
June 28, 2008
Watch this great video with Germany’s goals en route to the European Football Championship final on June 29th in Basle,Switzerland.
Germany are the first side that qualified for the EURO 2008 final with a dramatic 3-2 semi-final win against Turkey. Low’s squad gained 4 wins but also lost against Croatia in the group stages. It all started with a 2-0 win over Poland. The second match was a 1-2 defeat against the Group B winners, Croatia. The 1-0 win against Austria was decisive for qualifying to the quarter-finals.
Then a quarter-final 3-2 win against Portugal, the favourites of the competition at that stage.
Then Turkey and now the final.
Germany versus Spain European Championship Final 2008
June 28, 2008
So at last its the final of the European football Championship 2008, to be held in Basle, Switzerland on Sunday evening. Is it the one you expected or hoped for ?
Maybe not but its certainly going to be fun. The German team have veered between playing exquisite football occasionally (!) to being totally and completely incompetent. Germany should really have been beaten by Turkey but a combination of poor finishing, bad luck and German resilience kept them in the game until the final minute when Germany,as they so often do, destroyed the hopes of the underdog. You have to give it to the Germans- they never give up and have the right psychological attitude to winning tournaments. The German team always believe that they are going to win and that more importantly they deserve to win AND you can’t argue with their tournament record. Along with the Brazilians they are probably the most successful international football teams of the last 30 to 40 years. This, however, is not one of their best teams. With the exception of Ballack and possibly Klose they lack any real class. Ballack is shining on the international stage more than he did at Chelsea in the English football league last season and he could be the key to Germany’s winning or losing on Sunday.
While the Germans lack real quality Spain have plenty. With Torres and Fabregas they have young players of genuine quality while Silva, Villa and Iniesta have a a significant role to play. The Spaniards demolished Russia 3-0 in their semi-final playing football with energy, creativity and flair. They simply swept the Russians aside as they did Holland, many people’s favourites,in the quarter finals.
While they may have a better team the Spaniards have a problem.
. The problem is attitude. Germany always have the right mental attitude;the Spaniards lack the same confidence, the same belief in their abilities. In Torres, Fabregas, Silva, Villa they have great players but they often lack consistency. The Germans are the kings of tournament play, the Spaniards, like England have nil point when it comes to big championship success.
My verdict- my head says Germany, my heart says Spain. Whatever the result this championship has been full of good football. Roll on the World Cup!
